I was born and raised here in Nassau, Bahamas. I didnโt have a strong connection to my culture growing up. My family wasnโt super huge and all of us werenโt that connected at that time, which was unusual for a Caribbean family, to be honest โ but thatโs what my situation was. I didnโt feel a connection to my country at all. Also, when your accent isnโt as strong, there is this feeling: โOh, you donโt sound Bahamian. Youโre not one of us. You canโt relate to us.โ I was introduced to photography early on through my fatherโs coffee table book. They were predominantly in all these different countries in Africa. I knew that whoever the photographers were โ most likely white men โ they were trying to bring attention to these different cultures, and I appreciated that at least. As a hobby, I would take pictures of people because I wanted to know their stories. A camera was a way of exploring that.
