Precious Narotso is a nairobi based visual artist, specialising in illustration and animation. Narotsoโs work is a vibrant blend of storytelling, cultural expression, and technical mastery. Her journey, however, is not just one of artistic success but also of resilience, determination, and an unwavering belief in the power of dreams.
Born and raised in Kenya, Precious Narotsoโs early life was marked by challenges that would have deterred many. Growing up in a society where traditional career paths are often prioritized over creative pursuits, she faced societal expectations that questioned the viability of art as a profession. Yet, Narotso refused to let these pressures define her. Instead, she channeled her passion for art into a driving force, using every obstacle as a stepping stone toward her goals.
โLife has a way of testing us,โ Narotso reflects. โBut every challenge is an opportunity to grow. Iโve learned to embrace my journey, no matter how difficult it may seem.โ

โIronically I expect to try with no fear, to not lock myself into one idea of what an artist should be or do look and speak like, allowing myself to go with the current of life as opposed to control it by limiting myself or the idea I have of myself.โ

Narotsoโs story is a testament to the transformative power of self-belief and hard work. From a young age, she was drawn to the world of visual storytelling, finding solace and expression in drawing and animation. Despite limited resources and support, she honed her skills through sheer determination, teaching herself the intricacies of illustration and animation. Her dedication paid off as she began to carve out a niche for herself in Nairobiโs competitive creative industry.
Her work is characterized by its vivid colors, intricate details, and deep cultural resonance. Whether through her illustrations or animations, Narotso seamlessly weaves together themes of identity, heritage, and modernity, creating art that is both visually stunning and thought-provoking.
As a female artist in a male-dominated field, Narotso has faced her share of challenges. Yet, she has remained undeterred, using her platform to advocate for greater representation and opportunities for women in the arts. Her success has not only shattered stereotypes but also inspired a new generation of female artists to pursue their passions fearlessly.

โGrowing up it was very clear that popular media was comfortable presenting a very surface level or limited idea of what the African experience is like. With my work, I aim to show the nuance of our existence especially as a Kenyan woman with a need to share the very real experiences of everyday kenyans through a fantastical lens.โ
Narotsoโs work has gained recognition both locally and internationally, with her animations and illustrations being featured in exhibitions, film festivals, and digital platforms. Her ability to tell compelling stories through her art has earned her a loyal following and cemented her place as one of Nairobiโs most promising visual artists.
Looking ahead, Narotso is committed to pushing the boundaries of her craft. She envisions a future where African stories are told through the lens of African artists, and where animation and illustration are recognized as powerful tools for cultural preservation and innovation. Through her work, she hopes to inspire others to embrace their unique journeys and to see challenges not as roadblocks but as opportunities for growth.
โArt has the power to change the world,โ she says. โItโs not just about creating beautiful images; itโs about telling stories that resonate, that inspire, and that bring people together.โ
โI think the future of african art is Africans themselves really appreciating, respecting and investing in african art. It doesnt have to be the pieces that cost millions, but the everyday, seeing the value of art in their lives and making time and setting aside finances for it, by going to art events, buying art, investing in art programs, encouraging their children to take up artistic pursuits etc.โ
