Nigerian artist Seun Adeyemi showcases the traditional art of masking through his portraiture series. Combining mixed media, graphic art and traditional sculpture pieces, he hopes to revitalize African understanding of a rich African historical legacy. His work was first a response to the controversial and alleged plagiarism of Damien Hirst of an ancient traditional Nigerian mask. He hopes that his work will spark interest for Nigerian art to a new generation of aspiring African artists and culture creators.
“The core idea behind the series is to promote our culture by giving Africa’s artistic representation – with a focus on the past – a feeling of life and uniqueness.”
