Nigerian Comics and Animation

Nigerian Comics and Animation

Thanks to artists like Spaceboy Nigeria we have been introduced to world of comics and animation in Nigeria. Like many parts of Africa, Nigeria has a strong but relatively unknown community of artists that are passionate about creative digital arts. The majority of these artists are limited by a lack of resources and also an unstructured and infant animation industry. Nevertheless, these independent artists continue to shell out great projects drawing attention to the potential of great projects coming out of the continent.

Lagos, Nigeria has already held multiple events and conference to encourage comics, cartoons and animation in the country. The Lagos Comics and Cartoons Carnival is an example of this gathering of lovers, fanatics and artists dedicated to the art of comics and animation. Animation workshops are held each year to promote and facilitate new artists.

  6. As curator of the exhibition Picha, that shows comic-drawings by artists from many African countries, I visited the Lagos Cartoon Festival in november 2008 together with TT Fons from Senegal and Kola Fayemi from Nigeria. I am pleased to see that the Nigerian scene is developing, with cool works from Yegwa Ukpo, Victor Eguvoen and Kenneth Shofela Stoker!
