African Digital Art

African Digital Art

ada_bannerThe term digital art is permeating through the web even though the precise definition is unclear. Digital art covers a wide range of artistic production; audio/visual production, animation, interactive projects, websites, short films, graphic art and design.

Africa has always influenced music, art and popular culture permeating through the media we consume on a daily basis. However, for the most part, there has been a large gap in the presence of digital art between Africa and the rest of the world. This can be explained mainly due to limited resources and the digital divide rather than the lack of talent and artistic potential.

Despite economic and technical challenges, African artists still find new ways to invent innovative spaces that engage in the exchange of ideas and artistry. With global and technological exposure in digital media, African artists can participate in the definition of ‘Africaness’ within this new context. African digital media forms can actively rewrite the often negative portrayal of African identity and offer instead a complex and diverse range of transnational ideas, identities, and creativity.
